Beginners Intro into Sewing

Want to sew and don’t know where to start? Have a new sewing machine or have one languishing under the stairs and just not sure how use it?

Then our brand-new introduction into Sewing is the perfect way to get you started.

This six-week total beginners’ course will get you feeling comfortable and confident with a machine. We will take you from setting up a sewing machine, learning different skills and techniques through to creating five fab projects.

Learning the basics and stitching up some great beginner projects will have you on the road  to build your confidence and learn new techniques. Once you’ve completed this course, you could go on to complete our Introduction to Dressmaking Course, take one of our other beginner dressmaking, quilting or improver sewing classes.

If you’d prefer to use your own machine you are very welcome to bring it with you.  Please see the notes below for full information.*

Each course is 6 weeks long and covers the following:

Week 1: Understand the Sewing Machine: Make a pin-cushion.

Understanding general machine usage and how to set up the machine; such as threading, winding a bobbin and changing the machine needle.

Practise sewing in straight lines, corners and curves, experiment with different stitches and when to use them.

At the end of the session, you will have made a sampler that we will turn into a pincushion.

What you will Need – just your lovely self this week we will provide everything.

Week 2: Bunting

In this session you will learn how to make a string of the ever-popular bunting. This session is designed to increase your sewing confidence and introduces intricate pinning and stitching as well as how and when to use bias binding.

What you will need– x2 Fat quarters of fabric and 2m of double fold bias binding ( we can advise on these items as it probably sounds like a strange language!)

Week 3: Envelope Cushion

During your third class you’ll learn how to cut and pin fabric accurately, sew in straight lines, create double turned hems, neat corners and finish your seams, and you’ll get to take home your completed cushion cover!

What you will need: 1/2m of fabric and a cushion pad approx. 16”

Week 4: Boxy Zippered Pouch

This week will reinforce all the skills you’ve learnt so far, plus you’ll learn how to insert a zip – a very valuable skill! Your pouch will be lined and make the perfect wash/make-up bag or pencil case!

What you will need: X2 fat quarters of fabric ,12 “ zip- we will provide you with fusible fleece for some extra umph in your project !

Week 5 & 6 : Pj Bottoms

In Your final two weeks whooo! Here we enter the world of dressmaking. You will learn how to measure and choose appropriate sizing.

How to lay out your pattern. Basic Construction techniques to include skills such as French seams, creating a casing and inserting elastic.

 What you will need- 2m- 2.5m of fabric – 1m of 1inch elastic matching thread. We will provide you with the pattern for this project.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

The class includes expert instruction, use of the studio’s  Elna machines, top up tools where required, plus tea, coffee and biscuits!

YOU NEED TO BRING

You will need a basic sewing kit to include, scissors, pins marking tool such as chalk wheel or pencil.  ( oh and a mug /cup for drinks ) Week 2-4 you will need to provide your fabric for each project. Each project only uses a small amount of fabric, usually no more than 0.5m etc. Week 5/6 requires more, but we will advise on the suitability of fabric types.  You’ll be given detailed information on which types of fabric to use and how much you need for each project. We provide everything else, sewing machines, Patterns where applicable.
